Heat pump installer in Bolton

Bolton is the part of Greater Manchester where the ground rises. That changes two things about a heat pump job: what the houses are built from, and what winter you have to design against.

Bolton's housing tells you exactly what the town was built on. Close to the West Pennine Moors, the local building material was stone rather than brick, and a lot of the older housing in the northern half of the borough — the terraces around Horwich, the villages up towards Egerton and Bromley Cross — is solid stone. South and west of the town centre the stock shifts to the more familiar brick terraces and inter-war and post-war semis of Farnworth, Little Lever, Kearsley and Westhoughton.

Stone walls are not brick walls

A thick random stone wall is generally a poor insulator despite its mass, and it behaves differently from brick when you insulate it. Many older stone buildings were built with lime mortar and rely on being able to dry out; wrapping them in the wrong impermeable insulation causes moisture problems rather than solving heat loss. That means the fabric conversation in a Bolton stone terrace is genuinely different from the one in a Manchester brick terrace, and it is one worth having with someone who will tell you when to leave the walls alone.

The good news is the same as everywhere else: heat pump viability is decided by whether you can emit enough heat at a low flow temperature, not by the wall build-up in isolation. Higher ground, colder design

Heat loss calculations are done against a design outside temperature taken from your location's weather data, and that figure is colder for higher, more exposed ground. A house on the moorland edge above Bolton is therefore sized against a harsher winter than an equivalent house in lowland Trafford, and exposure to wind adds to it. Practically, that means a slightly larger heat pump and a bit more emitter capacity for the same floor area.

It does not mean heat pumps stop working when it gets cold. Output and efficiency do fall as the outside temperature drops, which is exactly why the design condition exists — a correctly sized system is specified to meet the house's demand on the coldest design day, not on a mild one. What you should be wary of is a quote produced from floor area and a rule of thumb, which is how undersized systems in exposed locations happen.

Most air source heat pumps in England go in under permitted development rather than a full planning application. they are still conditional — there are limits on the size and siting of the unit, and an MCS 020 noise assessment is normally part of demonstrating compliance. Conservation areas, listed buildings and flats are treated differently, and the council's planning team is the authority on your specific address. Assume nothing; check first.

Oil, LPG and the moorland fringe

Most of urban Bolton is on mains gas. The outlying properties towards the West Pennine Moors are where you are most likely to find homes that were never connected and run on an oil or LPG tank instead — and for those homes the case for a heat pump is far stronger than it is for a mains gas household, on grant, on running cost and on getting rid of the tank. Grants available in Bolton

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) covers England and Wales and is administered by Ofgem, so Bolton homeowners are eligible on exactly the same terms as anywhere else in England. The amounts are fixed:

  • £7,500 towards an air source, ground source or water source heat pump.
  • £9,000 where the property is off the gas grid and currently heated by oil or LPG. This is a £1,500 uplift, it applies to air-to-water and ground source only, and it runs from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027.
  • £5,000 towards a biomass boiler — off gas grid, rural, emissions certificate required.
  • £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. Residential only, and it does not get the uplift.

Which figure applies depends entirely on whether your home is on the gas grid. Connected to mains gas, it is £7,500. Off the gas grid on oil or LPG — most likely on the moorland fringe north and west of the town — it is £9,000, until 31 March 2027. Check your energy bills rather than guessing; the presence of a tank in the garden is the usual giveaway.

Two details worth knowing. First, you no longer need an EPC — that requirement was removed on 28 April 2026, which means outstanding loft or cavity wall recommendations can no longer block an application. Second, the installation has to be commissioned within 120 days of the Ofgem application, so the grant is not something to sit on. The MCS-certified installer applies for you and takes the grant off your bill; you never handle the money yourself.
