Heat pump installer in Bury

Bury is a borough of two halves. Head north from the town centre and the housing turns to stone: the terraces and cottages of Ramsbottom, Summerseat and Tottington were built from the same gritstone as the moors above them. Head south and you reach Whitefield and Prestwich, where the typical home is a semi-detached house from the 1920s to the 1960s with a cavity wall, a garden and room down the side.

A solid stone wall loses heat quickly, and it needs to be able to dry out. That matters when you think about insulating it, because the wrong impermeable insulation on an old stone wall can cause damp rather than cure heat loss. It is a conversation about the building fabric, not a reason to rule out a heat pump.

What decides whether a heat pump works is whether each room's radiators can deliver enough heat at a low flow temperature — typically around 45–50°C rather than the 70°C-plus a gas boiler uses. On a stone terrace that usually means a proper room-by-room heat loss calculation and upsizing some radiators. Homes higher up the valley sides are sized against a colder design temperature than those in the town centre, which can mean a slightly larger unit.

The inter-war and post-war semis in the south of the borough are close to the ideal starting point. Most have filled or fillable cavity walls, loft space that can be topped up, and side access for the outdoor unit, which avoids the siting puzzles of a mid-terrace. The original radiators were often sized generously, so more of them work at heat pump temperatures than people expect.

Brick terraces in Radcliffe and central Bury

Radcliffe and the streets around Bury town centre are largely brick terraces from the cotton and paper-mill era. They behave like terraces elsewhere in Greater Manchester: solid walls, shared party walls and small rear yards. The outdoor unit usually goes in the yard, so airflow, a drain for condensate and a noise check against the neighbours all need surveying rather than assuming.

Homes near the River Irwell

Parts of Radcliffe, Bury and Ramsbottom sit close to the River Irwell, and some streets flooded in December 2015. If your home is in a flood-risk area, that should shape the design. The outdoor unit can be raised on a wall bracket or a raised plinth so it sits above likely flood levels, and electrical connections and controls can be placed higher on the wall. Grants available in Bury

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) covers England and Wales and is administered by Ofgem, so Bury homeowners are eligible on exactly the same terms as anywhere else in England. The amounts are fixed:

  • £7,500 towards an air source, ground source or water source heat pump.
  • £5,000 towards a biomass boiler — off gas grid, rural, emissions certificate required.
  • £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. Residential only.

For an air source, ground source or water source heat pump the grant is £7,500, on the same terms across the whole borough, from Ramsbottom to Prestwich.

Two details worth knowing. First, you no longer need an EPC — that requirement was removed on 28 April 2026, which means outstanding loft or cavity wall recommendations can no longer block an application. Second, the installation has to be commissioned within 120 days of the Ofgem application, so the grant is not something to sit on. The MCS-certified installer applies for you and takes the grant off your bill; you never handle the money yourself.
