Tameside in short
- Nine towns, including Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge, Hyde, Denton, Droylsden, Dukinfield and Mossley.

Tameside is a borough of mill towns along the River Tame. The western side, closer to Manchester, is largely brick terraces and twentieth-century semis. Travel east and the ground rises into the foothills of the Peak District and the Pennines, where Mossley, Stalybridge and the Longdendale villages have more stone-built houses on steep, exposed sites.
Terraces and semis in the west of the borough
Terraced homes in Denton, Droylsden, Audenshaw and Hyde have solid brick walls but shared walls on both sides, so total heat loss is often manageable. The design aims for a low flow temperature — around 45–50°C — which usually means upsizing some radiators. Inter-war semis are often simpler still, with cavity walls and side access for the outdoor unit.
Hillside homes in the east
Homes on high ground around Mossley, Stalybridge and Longdendale are designed against colder outside temperatures, and wind exposure adds to heat loss. That usually means a slightly larger heat pump and more radiator capacity for the same floor area. Steep sites can also make outdoor-unit siting and pipe runs harder, and old stone walls need breathable insulation approaches rather than sealed ones.
Flats above shops and town-centre homes
Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde and Stalybridge all have traditional town centres with flats above shops and converted upper floors. An individual heat pump for a flat needs somewhere for the outdoor unit that is structurally and acoustically suitable, and consent from whoever owns the building or its external walls. For many flats that rules out an outdoor unit altogether, so a survey should start by confirming who controls the outside of the building. Houses on the terraced streets around the town centres are a more typical job: the unit normally goes in the rear yard, after an airflow, drainage and noise check.
Most air source heat pumps in England go in under permitted development rather than a full planning application. they are still conditional — there are limits on the size and siting of the unit, and an MCS 020 noise assessment is normally part of demonstrating compliance. Conservation areas, listed buildings and flats are treated differently, and the council's planning team is the authority on your specific address. Assume nothing; check first.

Grants available in Tameside
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) covers England and Wales and is administered by Ofgem, so Tameside homeowners are eligible on exactly the same terms as anywhere else in England. The amounts are fixed:
- £7,500 towards an air source, ground source or water source heat pump.
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler — off gas grid, rural, emissions certificate required.
- £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. Residential only.
For an air source, ground source or water source heat pump the grant is £7,500, on the same terms in every Tameside town.
Two details worth knowing. First, you no longer need an EPC — that requirement was removed on 28 April 2026, which means outstanding loft or cavity wall recommendations can no longer block an application. Second, the installation has to be commissioned within 120 days of the Ofgem application, so the grant is not something to sit on. The MCS-certified installer applies for you and takes the grant off your bill; you never handle the money yourself.
